ReadyMade
ReadyMade is the magazine of DIY (do-it-yourself) culture
- a Martha Stewart for the rock-n-roll set. Published in
Berkeley, it's made a nice name for itself. When I visit
offices at magazines like Wired, Metropolis, and other design
titles, I regularly see it atop the pile stacked on an editor's
desk. It's a fresh voice in a publishing sector which too
often promotes design as something you appreciate by buying
it.
Until my girlfriend's graduate education necessitated a
move to New York, I was managing editor. The fresh air breezed
through our Berkeley loft, rustling the two-story curtains,
and we drank chai instead of coffee. It was very California
after working in the towering monstrosity of VNU, Inc., and
in 2005 we were nominated for an ASME for general excellence.
We lost to PRINT, but as one of two full-time editors at
the magazine, and having generated so much content for it,
I was very proud.
